So everybody gets sick from time to time? For some of us any excuse not to go for a run or go to the gym and we'll use it. Then there are those of us who don't like to give ourselves a break and will exercise no matter what. The question is should I really exercise while I'm sick?
The answer really is up to you, however there are a few things to think about. If you are sick above the neck such as a runny nose or a cough then it's ok to train but it is a good idea to not go quite as hard. Then if you are sick below the neck like a chest infection, aches and pains or a stomach bug then it's time to have a couple of days away from exercise. If you have a fever then the answer is definitely NO. Your body is already at a raised temperature you don't want to make it any higher.
Let's be honest unless you are competing in an event a couple of days off is not going to hinder you as long as you get straight back into it when you feel better. The thing to consider is if you have a couple of days away from the gym then you will most likely make a faster recovery anyway. If you are really sick and exercise then the chances are you will only make yourself worse and then end up having more time off.
Know your limits. If you do feel well enough to exercise then take it down a notch. If you're doing cardio then go a shorter distance at a slower pace. If you're doing weights then reduce the amount that you're lifting until you make a full recovery. You can always take yourself on a nice outdoor walk. Fresh air will do you the world of good.
The other extremely important factor is think of the people that you are sharing that environment with. Have you ever been in the gym and heard someone cough and the first thing that comes into your head is " They better not give it to me”! You don't want that person to be you. Also if you have a stomach bug they are easily passed on. Remember you are sharing and touching equipment that other people use so have some consideration for your fellow gym users.
A lot of the time when you are sick you just have to ride it out so in the meantime make sure that you drink plenty of water and eat fresh vegetables and fruit. If your symptons don't improve go and see your doctor immediately.
Training when injured falls under the same category, if you don't give yourself enough rest then you will only make the injury worse. If it is a long term injury then definately seek the advice of your doctor or phsyio as to whether it is ok to exercise and what sort of exrercise you should do. It could also be worth employing a personal trainer who specialises in rehabalitation.
What to consider before you pack your gym bag:
- Am I sick above or below the neck? Is it a running nose or aches and pains?
- Am I contagious? Am I going to pass it on to others?
- Do I have a high fever?
If you decide to exercise make sure you:
- take it a bit easy lower the weight and the intensity
- stay well hydrated
- if you are feeling faint then stop
- wash your hands regularly
- the most important thing is to look after yourself
