Do you wake up on a Sunday feeling like you've been wacked over the head, and fallen head first into the Sahara desert with your mouth open? Are the first words you speak something along the lines of “I'm NEVER drinking again”? And finally, is the first thing you reach for water, panadol and a greasy breakfast to cure you of last nights barely remembered antics?

Christmas is almost here and with it comes the festive season. You've got a whole list of alcohol infused parties to attend and you don't want to be known as the party pooper. But you also don't want to be known as the over-confident karaoke singing person, who loves everyone way too much.

It's easy to enjoy alcohol and not get too carried away. Here's a few simple things to do and remember.

  • Moderation – Alcohol is something that is to be enjoyed in moderation not by the slab or bottle. If you're going to drink make sure it's something you enjoy and only have it occasionally, not every day of the week.
  • Standards – Know how many standard drinks are in each bottle or glass you're consuming.
  • Eat – Make sure you have a decent meal before you start to drink. This ensures the alcohol is slowly absorbed into your system.
  • Hydrate – Have a glass of water between each alcohol drink to keep hydrated.
  • Limitations – If your night usually goes a little something like this, 1 tequila, 2 tequilas, 3 tequilas...floor. There is a good chance you don't know your drinking limitations. Know how much you can handle and sip drinks don't gulp them.

We all know you wake-up feeling nauseas, dizzy, thirsty with a thumping headache when you consume too much alcohol. But there are many long term effects associated with excess drinking including but not limited to diabetes, weight gain, heart damage, liver damage and high blood pressure. You might think your partying only leads to one sacrificed Sunday morning but it might actually be setting you up for life time of health problems.
